Tried out this software today.
It was brief because I just didn't see a whole lot of value (for me).
I sometimes am interested in some of the stats that it tracks but I find that I don't need that information most of the time, so it doesn't make sense to me to have this running all of the time.

I've started using Konfabulator for processor speed (along with some other features of Konfabulator) - so, having this running too seems to be over kill.
However, if you don't like Konfab, or you just like to have all kinds of information at your finger tips about what's going on in your computer, CoolMon seems to be a good way to go.

This is pretty interesting but not all that surprising...

This story about a digital plague in the online game World of Warcraft is both fascinating and depressing:

[The game’s designers gave] a monster the ability to curse in-game avatars with a self-propagating, albeit temporary, disease. While the developers only intended the disease to affect the group of characters fighting the monster, the infectious malady quickly became a tool in the hands of malicious players known as griefers, who found ways to bring the digital virus into heavily inhabited areas of the world.

For a week, the efforts of malicious players left behind massive casualties, made cities nearly uninhabitable, and became a reminder of the uncontrollability of self-propagating code.

"There are three things you can do: infect people, die, and watch other people do the first two," said one person posting to the World of Warcraft community forum under the handle 'Modahan.'

The result was entire cities and regions of the game that became uninhabitable, contrary to what WoW’s designers intended. As Matthew Skala puts it, “It's claimed that it would have been well-contained if the initial victims had had the grace to just stick around and die, but human nature took its course, and massive devastation in the game world ensued.” It took changing the code to limit the outbreak’s geographical spread to bring things back under control.

It's an interesting look in to human nature and at how "real" something like the WOW environment can be.
I've always wanted to play and wish I could have at least seen this going on.

Thanks to narco for sending in this little tidbit of info. This Japanese site has already managed to grab an iPod nano and they even performed a detailed dissection of the little wonder. Here's a link to the Beta Google translation of the page.

From the looks of these pics and the horribly translated Japanese, it appears that the 4GB iPod nano features two 2GB flash chips while the 2GB features only one. It also doesn't look like people will be able to canabalize the memory to use in their digital cameras the way people did with the iPod mini. Too bad.

Over at the PVRblog they're talking about the new DirecTV DVR (the replacement for the Tivo). While I'm interested in the new HD capabilities, I think I'm emotionally attached to the idea of "tivo" and am not looking forward to a replacement. It may even be a lot better but I very much have a resistance to a replacement.
What great marketing.

That being said, I wouldn't mind more hard drive space. I just haven't had a compelling reason to make a change.

Confused about ActiveWords

I don't get it.
ActiveWords seems like a great/good program that does what it is supposed to do... However, I just don't understand why it gets so much "press" (blog entries).
I use Macro Express from www.macros.com and it seems to do basically the same thing. There's scripting and there's action recording. I use hundreds of short cut keys for names and obscure e-mail addresses that I use often.
When writing documentation I often create a short key for the project title and I've got on that includes my conference/bridge line information along with some 'fill in the blank' items that should be in every meeting invite... Regardless of all that, it was cheap to buy - I think it was about 39 dollars - and has a similar feature set as ActiveWords. So, I just don't understand why it doesn't get more attention.

My daughter's game cube fell off the entertainment center in the garage twice and the 2nd time caused the controller to be jammed in to the front of the console and break the board.
I looked online for nintendo repair and came across Ahead Games.
They appeared to be legit, so I shipped off the unit to them for fixin'.

It was 34.99 plus the cost of shipping both to their site and back from their site.
Nintendo charges a base price of $50 so this seems to be a better deal.
Also, I received a personal message from one of the company's associates talking about what was fixed and that I could soon expect the unit to arrive in the mail. I really appreciate that personal touch, so I thought I'd mention their names here.

Hopefully it will arrive in one piece and we can close the loop on this good customer experience.

I've just signed up for a user account at a site (Site A) hoping to find some deals on tax leins.
In their privacy policy they state that -
"We require the use of a secure browser before a connection can be made to the registration system."
and yet - they actually did not require a secure connection.
In fact, they send back your user id and password (via the web) via unencrypted channels too.
I've shipped off a note to their support desk and am interested to see what they do about this.

I'm currently trying out the Yahoo! Unlimited music service - they're offering a 7 day trial.
So, as mentioned in a previous post - I have a Creative Zen Micro and have been pretty please over the last few months.

In order to get the DRMd music to work, I had to download a firmware patch which is apparently in beta (Grabbed it here).
The application of the patch was pretty easy. As the instructions say - the device rebooted a number of times and it erased all my data (no concerns there).

Windows XP had no issue recognizing the device and offered to synchronize music after I plugged it in.

I tried the "Zen Micro Media Explorer" - a new icon added to my desktop as part of the install. Again, no issues seeing the device but the interface was nowhere as good as something like Creative MediaSource (and I'm not totally thrilled with that one either).

After having played with the Zen micro with some downloaded DRMd music from Yahoo! the biggest peeve for me is the DELAY, anywhere from 3 - 7 or more seconds, when I skip a song.
That is definitely not cool. And with all the music I can download from Yahoo! I end up having a few songs I don't really like or don't feel like listening to right at the moment.
If the speed were better, I would be very happy with the overall experience. Perhaps when the beta is complete the speed will be better. I will watch and wait for updates.

First off, I'd like to express how happy I've been with the
folks over at ClearContext. I identified an issue with an older version of
Outlook, suggested a fix and they sent me a revised exe. That is awesome. So,
besides good support, what does this program do? Well, I can't say that I've
explored 100% of the functionality but am using portions of it every day. One
of the easiest and most handy functions (to me) is depicted below.

Before I jump in – an intro –

From my perspective, the main change to my day-to-day life
is the addition of a series of views, a new tool bar and the concept of ‘topics’
and priority using colors and rankings.

I loosely associate topics to categories but they do not map
to one another.

The tool bar shows up in the inbox view and in the message
view (the one problem I had was the icon on the message view).

In Outlook 2000, when starting a new message the icon would replace whatever I had on the clip board. Not cool when I was cutting and pasting information from one document to a new e-mail.
Very frustrating and I hope they include a fix in their next release.

Here is how I set up a rule for auto handling – expense related
items.

First, I select an item.

Second I click "Auto Assign" and a Dialog box will
pop up. This dialog allows me to select from a number of different options.

Name –
I name the rule… would be nice to know if I’ve used a name before.

Sender
– I can select a sender or multiple senders to which I can associate the rule.

Received
by – If I have multiple accts, I could associate rules to each one.

Subject
– I can select a string to associate with the rule – allowing me to either
have the full subject or a match to any “keyword” in the string.

Body –
similar to subject as far as the options go.

Actions –

I can associate the item to a specific topic and/or assign a
priority.

I like being able to select whether – the e-mail gets filed
immediately and to apply the rule to the inbox.

I’m unclear so far on the hierarchy of execution… e.g. if an
e-mail comes in that matches 2 or more rules, which one runs first.
I need to play with that a little more.

In this example, I’ve selected an item with the subject of ‘submit
expense’

I’ve clicked the “Message subject contains” item.

And have left it as the default value that was carried over
from my inbox.

And as a last step – I’ve told ClearContext to file every thing in the inbox right now.

Now – under another folder called “ClearContext Topics” a folder is created with the same name as whatever I used as the name
of the topic. Easy!

Pros – automated, easy to use, intuitive, seems stable.

Cons – don’t like the icon/clip board issue above, has some
issues integrating with the “Getting Things Done” add in but I think this is
only for Outlook 2000.

Overall, I think it’s worth it.

I was just thinking about Shaquille O'Neal and how dominant he has been over the last few years. He's had his detractors and I'm honestly not a fan, per se, but I do recognize that he's had an impact.
I also enjoyed watching Michael Jordan during the peak of his career though I would root against him just because I like to root for the underdog. Anyway, I wondered how Shaq and Michael would match up against one another (along with their teammates). Browsing through the web I found this site that allows you to input different teams from different years, match them up and show the results. Almost exactly what I was looking for.

The other day I heard about Fotobuzz reading some random blog.
Sorry can't remember the specific one -
The software sounded pretty cool so I went here and downloaded.
Then, from the same blog, I found this blog entry - where there were some brief instructions on how to install on Drupal.
Obviously this is a blog spot blog so,- this was for another one that I run.
Anway the instructions on Mr. Luster's site indicate that one should open up a .theme file. I'm just using the default bluemarine theme and there is no .theme file.
So, I was confused.

I tried modifying the theme.inc file and some others but eventually settled on this one -
xtemplate.xtmpl
in the root/themes/bluemarine folder

DISCLAIMER: I am not recommending that you make any modifications. If you do, you do so completely at your own risk. OH YEAH, remember to always, always take back ups. i could have been really messed up when I was experimenting with this.

Anyway the top section of the file looked like this...

I presume you uninstalled any pop up blockers you have? After all, it doesn't allow you to configure which pop ups are let in and which ones are blocked. You also don't skip commercials on any PVR or VCR, do you? That's ptting all the control in the hands of the hardware vendor, who gets to decide what an ad is.

For whatever it's worth, I tend to agree with Scott, but just from a usability and tweakability perspetive. If Autolink came preconfigured with a set of links but allowed me to change them (customize), I could handle that. That would give the creator (in this case Google) control over the majority of the users but give others the ability to change their preferences.

I also agree with James in that one is not forced to download and use the tool. I just think that it would be enhanced by some additional functions. I'm not sure I understand the point about skipping commercials on a pvr. Maybe that's because I'm used to Tivo vs another brand. Skipping commercials (if that means fast fowarding) avoids advertising at the individual user level within the users control whereas Google is inserting advertising at the user level outside the user's control.

I can't hum the full theme of the A-Team but I definitely know what he's talking about. When I was a kid, I loved this show.
Even had Mr. T cereal.
